I rish & I nternational A rt M onday 21 st O ctober 2019 at 6.00 pm 15 6 Liam Belton RHA (b.1947) Oil Lamp with Eggs (2015) signed lower right, dated and titled verso oil on canvas 41 x 56cm (16 x 22in) Provenance: Peppercanister Gallery, Dublin; Private Collection €4,000-6,000 (£3,539-5,309) Although he has worked a great deal with landscape, notably including the sites of ancient monuments in Ireland, and the human figure, Liam Belton, a meticulous draughtsman, is probably best known, and celebrated, as a still life painter. His usually austere palette tends towards monochrome, and his precise arrangements of kitchen crockery and utensils often have anthropomorphic hints, not unlike the sexual puns of Picasso’s still lifes. Here, as it happens, the spherical forms of eggs and bowl echo the 1933 Picasso etching in the background, Three Seated Nudes and Basket of Flowers, while the body-like oil lamp suggests warmth.
