Morgan O'Driscoll Irish & International Art Auction 21st October 2019

18 9 Lilian Lucy Davidson ARHA (1873-1954) The Forge signed with monogram lower left with artist’s label with title and price of £15.15 verso watercolour 38.5 x 57cm (15.25 x 22.5in) Provenance: Private Collection €1,500-2,500 (£1,327-2,212) A friend of Mainie Jellett, Lilian Lucy Davidson was, like Jellett, one of the generation of exceptionally capable, independent minded women artists who contributed greatly to Irish art and cultural life in the early 20th century, particularly in the move toward modernism. She painted notable portraits, and she designed and painted theatre sets, but her passion was for natural subjects out of doors and she worked extensively throughout Ireland as well as spending time in France and Belgium. This fine watercolour demonstrated her combination of technical expertise and relaxed, informal attitude.
